The Grand Bazaar is located within the Al-Fateh area, known for its authenticity and long history, and it extends from the western to the eastern side between Beyazit and Nurusmania.
• History of the Grand Bazaar:
The Grand Bazaar has many names such as the Covered Bazaar, Kabale Karsi, the Roofed Market and others. Despite the different names throughout history, the market has retained its great importance throughout the ages to be one of the most important tourist and historical destinations in the city. The Grand Bazaar was built at the request of Sultan Mehmed II in 1461 AD, and the initial structure was made of wood only, and then stone and bricks were added to the bazaar. The Grand Bazaar has been subjected to many disasters over the course of the days, starting with fires in the years 1701 and 1750 AD, ending with the earthquake in 1766, followed by more fires, the last of which was in 1954, and as a result, it was restored many times.
• Sections of the Grand Bazaar:
The Grand Bazaar extends over an area of more than 30 hectares and occupies about 65 streets and contains 18 entrances, and includes more than 4000 shops displaying different types of goods and products, as well as various restaurants and cafes. More than 25 thousand employees work in the bazaar and it is visited daily by more than 400 thousand visitors and tourists, and for this reason it is classified as the most attractive tourist area for visitors in Turkey. The bazaar is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm, except on Sundays.
• The most important activities that can be done in the Grand Bazaar:
1- You must first take a quick and comprehensive tour to get to know the market and its sections closely and discover its depths.
2- Do not forget to bring the camera with you, as you will be amazed at the splendor of the architectural design of the market, especially its distinctive roof, and you can certainly take many souvenir photos.
3- When you visit such an archaeological and historical place, you must buy some souvenirs for friends and family back home, and there are many stores that sell these special pieces.
4- In the Grand Bazaar, there are shops specialized in selling silver and gold tools, as well as antique jewelry pieces that date back to the Ottoman era. Of course, there are many shops of copper tools and old coins, as you can buy a set to decorate your home with.
