Despite the different names throughout history, the market has retained its great importance throughout the ages to be one of the most important tourist and historical destinations in the city. The Grand Bazaar was built at the request of Sultan Mehmed II in 1461 AD, and the initial structure was made of wood only, and then stone and bricks were added to the bazaar. The Grand Bazaar has been subjected to many disasters over the course of the days, starting with fires in the years 1701 and 1750 AD, ending with the earthquake in 1766, followed by more fires, the last of which was in 1954, and as a result, it was restored many times.
