As urbanisation crept in and the population density increased, Istanbul's city began to expand east, west, north and south. As a result, new areas have emerged. One of them is the Başakşehir district, which has recently gained fame and given the title of the new centre of Istanbul.

During the Ottoman Caliphate, Başakşehir  was known as Azatlık, which served as a gunpowder depot from which the Ottoman army was supplied.
