Istanbul Canal (New Bosphorus)

The Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, through the head of its Communications Department in the Turkish Presidency, Mr. Altun, responded to the suspicions raised by many parties about the Istanbul Canal project.

1. Suspicion: The Istanbul Canal will lead to Istanbul’s thirst because of its passage from the Sazli Dore Dam and will also lead to an increase in the salinity of the groundwater.
Truth: The Sazli Dam provides 49 million cubic meters of water to the city of Istanbul, but the Malan Dam is currently being built and will hold 1.1 billion cubic meters of water.

2. Suspicion: The construction that will spread on both sides of the canal will negatively affect the thermo-environmental balance and humidity and will turn Istanbul in a short period into a hot island.
Truth: On the shores of Lake Kucukcekmece, there will be no construction here, but there will be a park and service and recreational facilities.

3. Suspicion: The archaeological sites located on the shores of Lake Kucukcekmece, such as Bathenoa Antik, the Rimburgaz Caves, will be damaged.
Truth: Canal Istanbul has nothing to do with these archaeological sites.

4. Suspicion: Canal Istanbul will burden the Istanbul municipality with an amount ranging between 25-30 billion Turkish liras.
Truth: The infrastructure and facilities that belong to the metropolitan municipality of Istanbul do not exceed 10 billion Turkish liras. In this regard, all necessary studies and calculations have been carried out.

5. Suspicion: Canal Istanbul will cost 110 billion Turkish liras, which will make it burdensome for 82 million Turkish citizens with taxes.
Truth: The cost of the project will be 75 billion Turkish liras, and it will be implemented according to the principle of (implementation -
investment - delivery), and this principle has been applied in many other mega projects.

6. Suspicion: The construction work in the project will increase traffic crises and lead to the closure of the TEM and E-5 main roads in Istanbul.
Truth: No major highways or side roads in the city will be used.

7. Suspicion: Canal Istanbul will lead to an earthquake.
Truth: Canal Istanbul is 11 km away from the seismic line. Canal Istanbul is 25 meters long, while the seismic line is 20 km deep, which makes this claim far from true. In addition, all the necessary studies have been prepared for any possible seismic or tsunami possibility, that is, affecting the buildings and harbors that will be located on both sides of the canal.

8. Suspicion: Since the Bosphorus Strait allows the passage of ships for free, why will the ships pass through the Istanbul Canal, which will be paid?
Truth: Ships passing through the Bosphorus canal pay fees for many of the services that the Turkish government provides to ships passing through the strait. Currently, the Bosphorus is experiencing a state of traffic congestion, which makes ships have to wait about 14 hours, until it became 30 hours late in 2017. This delay causes increased financial costs for companies, which pushes ships to prefer crossing from the canal
