The New Silk Road
Last Updated: 2023-07-27The New Silk Road
The New Silk Road is considered the largest and largest economic, development and commercial project in the world. It covers more than a third of the world. It is a unique trade route that linked Asia and Europe since the second century BC. The traveler Marco Polo spoke about him in the thirteenth century in his book "The Story of Miracles". The idea of opening the road brought to mind the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars train line, because this line will play the most important role in reviving the historic Silk Road again.
The world today is facing a new and radical transformation, and this transformation will turn the scales upside down, because Western hegemony and control has begun to collapse little by little. The United States of America began to move towards the system of globalization by sharing influence with the countries that began to rise and witnessed their renaissance on the globe, including Russia and China, whose economies ranked second in the world. Certainly, this sharing of influence between America and the countries of the Middle East will turn into a "slant of influence", because the center of gravity is gradually tilting from the Atlantic to the Pacific, specifically to China, which has the second largest economy in the world today, and raises the banner of globalization from now on. This vision is embodied by Chinese President Xi Jinping through the revival of the historic Silk Road.
It's the Iron Silk Road
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, specifically in 1993, calls rose in Turkey to launch this line, which aims to link Turkey with the peoples living around the Caspian Sea and increase cultural and economic interdependence between them. Although it was disrupted due to the lack of funding after the World Bank and the European Bank refused to fund it on the pretext of ignoring it, Armenia was linked to the line. However, the project came back to the fore in 2007 after being funded by Turkey and Azerbaijan. It was opened in 2017, and China integrated that line by extending a railway from western China to Kazakhstan, for Chinese goods to cross the Caspian Sea by ferry to Azerbaijan, and then completing the road to Turkey via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.
This global line will start from China and will reach Europe via Anatolia and the Mediterranean. And the project that is to pass through 65 countries will be completed in 2049. This means that the center of gravity of the world will begin to tilt to the east from 2050. Because the modern Silk Road is the largest economic and development project that the globe will witness. It includes more than a third of them, as sea transport is the cheapest method for many goods, which is why China is strengthening relations with Turkey significantly. In this context, the giant Chinese container shipping company COSCO Pacific acquired the Comoport port in the Marmara Sea, which is the third largest port in Turkey, for one billion dollars, to provide navigation and logistic services to passing ships.
In November, the first train to leave China for Europe passed through the Bosphorus Strait through the Marmaray Tunnel in Istanbul for the first time, and this is evidence that the dream of activating the "railroad" has actually come true. The China National Railways Corporation is scheduled to connect Prague in the Czech Republic and Xi'an, the capital of Shanxi Province in central China, directly via Turkey.
Trade lines change:
The discovery of the Cape of Good Hope by the Spaniards, which had contributed to the emergence of several Western powers such as: Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and England. On the other hand, the demise of the Mamluk state’s star after only 20 years of the transformation of Europe’s trade from Egypt and the Levant to the new road, and what was accompanied by a significant decrease in residence and taxes, and contributed to the weakening and fall of the Mamluk state. Then the American fleet inherited the status of the Spanish Empire after their expulsion from the Caribbean Sea at the end of the nineteenth century. And the influence of the American fleet extended to control all the straits and sea lanes through which most of the world's trade in oil and goods pass through seven naval fleets.
Thus, we can say that Erdogan’s vision convergence with the leaders of China and Russia has borne fruit and contributed to the establishment of trade corridors to link the heart of the old world with each other strategically and economically, as well as the extension of pipelines to transport gas and oil from production fields in Asia to places of consumption in Europe via Turkey, such as: The Turkish Stream and the Tanab Project, which increases the interdependence of interests in the Eurasia region, away from the American influence, which is steadily weakening.
Will the coming years witness a change in the geopolitical map of the world? After changing global trade routes? This is what we will know after the completion of the construction of this connecting road...
