Tea in Turkey between traditional love and national symbol
Turkish tea is considered one of the most important daily habits of the Turkish citizen. It is linked to an ancient culture and civilization that has been associated with them since time immemorial.
Turkish tea is not just an ordinary drink but it represents hospitality and friendship and is the start of an enjoyable conversation between any two people. When tea is offered to you, it is a way of welcoming you and your visit. Tea is found in small Turkish villages and large cities and throughout the country and is widely consumed in families, shops and restaurants. Tea is one of the basic elements that are found among the gatherings of Turkish men and an essential thing around which the family gathers at home. Most villages in Turkey have their own tea place where only local men are allowed to mingle, talk and smoke.
Turks consume more tea each year than any other country, and according to the data of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Turkey ranks third in terms of tea consumption, consuming approximately 240,000 tons annually. It is also the fifth tea-producing country in the world, producing 220,000 tons annually.
Tea is produced on the Black Sea coast and due to its mild climate, fertile soil and high levels of precipitation, this is a great place for tea cultivation. A number of tea plantations can also be found at the Georgian border to Trabzon. The tea is produced in the period between May and October and the leaves are collected and left to wither and be easily broken and turned into natural tea.
Turkish tea is usually prepared using a special pitcher called "çaydanlık" specially designed for tea preparation. It consists of two jugs, one smaller than the other, in which a quantity of tea is placed with a little water. A small cup of tea is placed from the tea leaves, and sometimes cinnamon sticks are added to it in order to give it a wonderful taste. The two lower layers are boiled together and the upper layer in which the tea leaves are located provides steam. Thus, it is boiled quietly until it ferments, and it is called (khmer).
Sometimes it is served with Turkish tea (kurabiye), which is very tasty and delicious, including salty and sweet, which is fragile and serving it with tea gives a wonderful taste and calm atmosphere.
