Sanjak Mosque is the most recent mosque in Istanbul
Last Updated: 2023-07-27Sanjak Mosque; Istanbul's newest mosque
Sanjak Mosque is one of the most recent mosques in Istanbul in terms of time and architecture; as the architectural design of the mosque aims to move away from the traditional look and feel of mosques, and from the decorations and inscriptions that we are used to seeing in the design of mosques. The people in charge of this mosque were interested in the religious architectural space inside the mosque, to express the Islamic religion, its simplicity and its truth, as it is a simple and deep religion at the same time.
The mosque was opened in early 2014 and has an area of seven thousand and 400 square meters.
Sanjak Mosque location:
Sanjak Mosque is located in Buyukcekmece district.
Designed by the architect Emery Arrollat.
The shape of the mosque:
The curved roof of the mosque gives the feeling of entering underground, and the inner courtyard of the mosque is divided into levels that end with the mihrab wall.
The mosque's upper courtyard promenade is surrounded by high walls that beautifully separate the chaos, movement and noise of the outside world from the tranquility and calmness the mosque creates.
Sanjak Mosque has an architectural design that makes the mosque a piece of land, from the surrounding nature, and this adds to the mosque a clear engagement with nature and a strong detachment from what surrounds it.
The entrance to the mosque resembles a simple cave that provides worshipers with reverence and attachment to God Almighty.
The walls of the mosque have broken cracks that point towards the Qibla of prayer and allow the sun's rays to penetrate into the mosque.
The building is a homogeneous contrast between nature and construction, between what man made and nature created by the Creator, and the mosque has stone stairs that come after the natural slope (which gives the worshipers a feeling of abandoning the world and turning to God Almighty).
Any chemical paint was avoided, and the design included basalt and black stones, adding to the spirituality of the mosque.
The mosque contains a library with a very large number of books, and among the goals of the library: to increase culture and awareness, spread the culture of reading, and attract scholars and strive for their industry.
The mosque, with its distinctive features, has entered a great competition with the most prominent architectural artifacts in the world in the past decade.
The mosque was awarded the "Future Project" award at the 2011 Barcelona International Architecture Festival.
And first prize in the "Religious Institutions" category at the Singapore International Architecture Festival in 2013.
And in 2014, the mosque was awarded the Turkish Chamber of Architects award.
It was also chosen from among the 40 best buildings in Europe in 2015, and in the same year, the World Federation of Architecture awarded it the title of the best religious building in the world.
The mosque recently received an International Excellence Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and was named one of the 20 best buildings of the year.
An architectural masterpiece that gave a different look from the usual and highlighted the necessity of having a vision for all the actions that a person strives to do.
