The history of the Egyptian market dates back to 1597 AD, when this market was established during the reign of Sultan Murad III to be the second largest market in Istanbul after the Grand Bazaar, as it contains more than 140 shops. As for the reason for calling it the Egyptian market, according to the historical information that has been transmitted, its name came because the spices and coffee that were sold in this market were imported from India and South Asia to Egypt and then to Turkey, specifically Istanbul, so it was called the Egyptian market. But of course, the Egyptian market has many other names, such as the Spice Market and the Attarin (herbalists) Market, and this is due to the spread of spices in it, which was the main commodity in the market and is very popular and is brought from the best places to display it within the shops in this market. The Egyptian market is still considered one of the most famous markets, despite the passage of a long time since its opening, but visitors and tourists head to it from everywhere to buy distinctive traditional goods and see antique shops.
