When the Legend Becomes a Reality:
Imitating the lost deep-sea city of Atlantis, 106 metres below sea, the Eurasia Tunnel, which connects Kumkapı in Fatih on the European side, and Koşuyolu in Kadıköy on the Asian side, was built. An underwater tubular bridge preliminary project presented in 1891 by a French engineer (Simon Préault), in which was patented by the then Ottoman Empire.
Based on the master transport plan undertaken by the prestigious Istanbul University, an economic feasibility study of a new transport line in the Bosphorus was conducted in 2003, and the Eurasia Tunnel was adopted as the best solution after determining the cost and potential risks.
The Eurasia Tunnel was opened in late 2016, which was a devastating blow to the back of the moles and anyone who had a hand in the failed coup, was created.
Innovation and Challenge:
The location of the tunnel in the far south was chosen after the three Istanbul bridges were taken into account, in a way the vehicle traffic between the two continents in Istanbul is balanced. Outrunning the other bridges, the transit time between the two continents has been reduced from one hour, 40 minutes to just 15 minutes!
Because Istanbul is located on a seismic fault, the tunnel had to be designed to withstand earthquakes, so it was equipped with struts to withstand an earthquake measuring 7.5 Richter.
The Turkish government decided to transfer the fees of crossing the Eurasia Tunnel to the families of the July 15 martyrs (the day of the failed coup attempt), namely 53 Turkish liras for cars and 79.50 Turkish liras for minibuses. Also, the crossing fees drop to 50% if it is between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Moving up:
The construction of the 14.6 km two-storey Eurasia Tunnel required a $1.2 billion investment under Turkish and Korean supervision, applying the highest quality standards. Especially since it is under the sea, it has a tsunami-resistant structure and can be used as an emergency shelter.
You may think you will be isolated from the world because you are under the sea, but that is not true! The tunnel is equipped with advanced equipment that enables you to use the mobile data with a high speed internet.
Not only the Eurasia Tunnel, but the Turkish government has always created competitive and unique projects, but it has the lead in some of them superior to many countries and even some developed countries. The most prominent of these projects include Istanbul Airport and the Istanbul Canal, which is currently under construction.
The Turkish Economy Has a Share of the Benefit:
In the early years of operation, the Eurasia Tunnel contributed 4.6 billion Turkish liras to the Turkish economy, saving 84 million hours and reducing 1,111 million transportation means.
Of course, it has created jobs, with nearly 12,000 employed during the construction period. Now, there are 200 employees operating and maintaining the tunnel.
On the environmental side, the Eurasia Tunnel has reduced CO2 emissions and saved fuel consumption significantly.
