Presidents of the Turkish Republic
The Republic of Turkey is a Eurasian country with an area of 780,000 km², comprising Anatolia (or what is historically known as Asia Minor) and parts of Eastern Europe. It is considered the political heir of the Ottoman Empire, as this republic was established on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish Republic was founded in 1923, by the Turkish military leader Mustafa Kemal. At the top of the pyramid of power there are, to this day, 12 presidents of the republic, who ruled Turkey in various stages in which its system fluctuated between a presidential republic and a parliamentary republic. As for the presidents of the Turkish Republic since its establishment until the present time, they are as follows:
1. Mustafa Kemal, nicknamed Ataturk: He held this position during the period between 1923 - 1938, and the system of government at that time was a presidential republic, and that period of the history of the Turkish Republic was known by the one-party rule, which is the Republican People's Party, the oldest political party in the Turkish Republic.
2. Ismet Inonu: Mustafa Kemal's friend and head of the aforementioned Republican People's Party, held the position during the period from 1938 to 1950. He was overthrown after an electoral defeat for his party, as for the Democratic Party headed by Adnan Menderes after the adoption of partisan pluralism in the country.
3. Jelal Bayar: He assumed the presidency of the Republic during the period of the Democratic Party's rule in the period from 1950 to 1960.
4. Jamal Kursal: The general was the leader of the first military coup in the history of the republic, which overthrew the government of the Democratic Party, who ruled in the period from 1960 to 1966.
6. Fakhri Koroturk He ruled during the period from 1973 to 1980.
7. Canaan Evren: The General, the owner of the largest military coup in the history of the Turkish Republic, assumed the presidency of the Republic during the period from 1982 to 1989.
8. Turgut Ozal: The eighth president of the Turkish Republic, the editor of the Turkish economy and the laying of the first building block for the renaissance of the modern Turkish economy. He held the position of the Presidency of the Republic during the period from 1989 to 1993.
9. Suleiman Demiral: Head of the Turkish Justice Party, he held the presidency of the Republic of Turkey from 1993-2000.
10. Ahmed Necdet Sezer He ruled during the period from 2000 to 2007.
11. Abdullah Gul: He is the eleventh president of the Republic of Turkey, and the first president of the Turkish Justice and Development Party. He assumed the presidency of the Republic from 2007-2014 after being nominated by the ruling Justice and Development Party.
12. Recep Tayyip Erdogan: The current President of the Turkish Republic of Turkey assumed this position in 2014 after being nominated by the ruling Justice and Development Party and elected directly by the people for the first time in the history of the Turkish Republic after the President of the Republic was elected by members of the Turkish Parliament. During his rule, the country switched to a presidential system, the position of prime minister was abolished, and the government was transformed into a presidential government, according to a popular referendum.
During the rule of the Justice and Development Party, the country witnessed an unprecedented economic, scientific, industrial, service and urban renaissance that moved the Turkish economy from the 111th rank to the 14th rank.
